THE STATION FAMILY FUND IN THE NEWS
A STATEMENT FROM THE STATION FAMILY FUND

August 3, 2009

On February 20, 2003, the fourth largest nightclub fire in U.S. history, now known as The Station Nightclub Fire resulted in 100 lives lost, 200 seriously injured and 65 children losing one or both parents.

In a state as small as Rhode Island, the story goes that anyone that lives there either knew someone who perished or knows someone that does.

Since that time, there have been hundreds of memorials and fund raisers, lawsuits and legislations. The Providence Journal has dedicated hundreds of pages and thousands of man hours in their reporting.

On February 25, 2008, a benefit concert entitled, "Phoenix Rising" took place in Providence, Rhode Island.

Put together in a matter of weeks, thanks to a group of people who opened up their rolodexes and their hearts, the benefit took place at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, known to locals as "The Dunk," who donated their venue and their staff. TESLA's Troy Lucketta convinced Dee Snider of Twisted Sister to host. Dee brought in his band to perform and reached out to country star John Rich of Big & Rich who then brought in Gretchen Wilson and Dierks Bentley. Tom Scholz & Gary Pihl of Boston performed with Stryper. The lineup continued to grow. VH1 brought a full production staff and truck to document the event and by the day of the show, the amount of people volunteering their services from all over the country exceeded any and all expectations.

In its present form, THE STATION documentary is a rough cut, first look at the concert and insight from a few of the survivors who recall first hand, the fire and its aftermath. Like many other films that are shown in their early stages at festivals, this version of THE STATION documentary is not a final.

The Station Family Fund acknowledges the countless hours director Pete Crowley and AP Dominic Izzy have spent with this first look and we are thankful to The Rhode Island Film Festival for their support.
