Woonsocket — When Theresa O’Toole looked at the flames igniting the stage at the Station Nightclub on Feb. 20, 03, her instincts told her something was wrong. She hesitated for a moment, waiting for a smoke detector to go off. When it didn’t, she grabbed her husband at the time and led him out the main door. The couple had arrived late to the Great White show that night and had a long trek back to their truck to retrieve their cell phone to call 9-1-1.

By the time they arrived back to the nightclub it was engulfed in flames. “You desperately wanted to help, but you couldn’t touch anybody because a lot of people had burns on their hands and bodies,” she recalls. “People were just in shock. We were trying to get them to calm down.”

News reports later revealed 100 people died in the fire, while more than 200 were injured. Four years after the tragedy some victims are still not receiving all the medical care they need to recover.

On March 25, 07, Peter Bottachiari and Marcel Martin, the owners of Rhode Island’s 1-800-GOT-JUNK? are hoping to assist with these costly procedures by holding a thrift sale.

“What happened that night was heartbreaking,” said Peter Bottachiari. “I remember watching the footage and just thinking how could that happen?”

After opening their business last month Peter and Marcel realized a lot of the “junk” they are called to remove is actually in great condition and could easily be another person’s treasure. They’ve decided to collect these abandoned treasures and put them aside for the thrift sale. One hundred per cent of the proceeds will benefit the Station Family Fund.
